PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — The city of Pflugerville is getting millions from the federal government to make sure its drinking water stays safe and clean for years to come.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the $156 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loan on Friday.
The money will allow Pflugerville to expand its water treatment plant, increase the capacity of its drinking water distribution system and upgrade pump stations.
Recently, the city has raised water and wastewater rates for customers to help fund improvement projects as the city grows. Officials say by using a loan from the federal government, the city will save millions in interest costs.
"With this partnership, the city can move forward on key projects, while saving the City of Pflugerville a substantial amount of money on the interest paid on the debt for these massive, legacy infrastructure projects," said Brandon Pritchett, the public utility director for the city. "Pflugerville has a phenomenal working relationship with the EPA WIFIA team, and we are thrilled to continue to work with them as we expand our water and wastewater systems.”
This is Pflugerville's second WIFIA loan. Two years ago, the city was awarded the first WIFIA loan, totaling $52 million, to support the Wilbarger Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility.
