AUSTIN, Texas — Bodycam footage released Monday shows the moments leading up to police shooting a stabbing suspect to death in northeast Austin.
On May 27, the Austin Police Department (APD) was called out to the San Paloma Apartments regarding a disturbance where neighbors said they could hear things being thrown, along with a woman screaming for help.
When APD arrived, a woman directed officers to the apartment where the disturbance was taking place. After receiving no response, officers forced their way into the apartment and through a second closed door. That's where they found 48-year-old Ensel Macalre-Urgelles on top of a woman, "actively stabbing" her.
APD said Officer Cody Schulz, who has been with the department for six years, shot Macalre-Urgelles. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, police said the woman was also taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times. She has since been released. Meanwhile, the relationship between the Macalre-Urgelles and the woman remains unclear at this time. Police said no one else was injured in the incident.
Allison Frazier, who lives above where the shooting happened, said she thought the disturbance was something else.
"It's really scary, especially as a college student who's away from their parents," Frazier said. "Really scary. We thought it was our cat knocking stuff over last night, but it was not a cat."
Schulz remains on administrative leave.
