AUSTIN, Texas — A stretch of bikeway is now open for cyclists to use on Shoal Creek Boulevard.
The two-mile path runs between Foster Lane and Shoalmont Drive. It connects to existing bike lanes from Foster Lane to U.S. 183.
The next section of bike lanes will go between Shoal Creek and 45th Street. Construction on that section is set to begin next week.
Work on the project began in the summer of 2019, funded by the 2016 mobility bond.
It will include a pedestrian and cyclist underpass at RM 2222 and Shoal Creek Boulevard, as well as improved intersection designs, parking retention along the east curb, new pedestrian crossings and sidewalks.
The entire 5.5-mile bikeway is expected to open by this summer.
The Austin Transportation Department says that new design of the street is safer and fewer drivers are speeding.
