AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: Court documents revealed new details on this deadly shooting in an update here. The original story continues below.

A man in his 40s is dead after a shooting early Monday morning in North Austin.

At approximately 3:57 a.m. on May 20, deputies with the Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) arrived at the scene of a shooting in the 13000 block of Amarillo Avenue, near McNeil Drive.

TSCO officials found a man with gunshot wounds and worked to revive him until Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived on scene. However, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the man died in the parking lot.

In an update Monday evening, TCSO said 36-year-old William Jewel Daniels of San Antonio was arrested around 4:30 p.m. and charged with murder.

Detectives believe the victim surprised or confronted a person who was burglarizing his vehicle.

“This is a perfect example of why I’m so proud of the men and women of TCSO. Once again, their teamwork and solid investigative skills came together to keep our community safe,” Sheriff Sally Hernandez said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the TCSO Tip Line at 512-854-1444 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. You can also submit a tip online.
