Texas lawmakers begin to endorse Kamala Harris for presidential nominee; locals push to get voters registered

Austinites have been taking to social media, saying they're ready to get involved again, especially in an election this big.

AUSTIN, Texas — Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become the party's nominee for president.

On Monday night, the Texas Democratic Delegation voted to endorse Harris as the nominee for president. On Tuesday morning, the Central Texas Democrats did the same.

Lawmakers from all over, including in Texas, began to react to the news of President Joe Biden ending his reelection campaign.

"We have not seen a president decline his party's nomination since the late 1960s. And it should be said, first of all, that Joe Biden will be recorded in history as one of America's most consequential presidents," Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) said.

Castro said he will stand behind Harris in her run for presidency.

"But it should be said also that it's not just elected officials who are rallying around Vice President Harris. The calls and the texts I've gotten from everyday Americans here in Texas suggest that they're going to rally behind her as well to defeat Donald Trump," Castro said.

Austinites have been taking to social media, saying they're ready to get involved again, especially in an election this big.

"It's so important that people pay a little bit of attention and participate in their democracy," Bruce Elfant, the Travis County Voter Registrar, said.

Elfant said his office is all hands on deck getting people registered.

"We have several thousand volunteer deputy registrars that who will be out and about," Elfant xaid. "We'll have volunteer deputy registrars at schools and at farmers markets and at festivals."

He said this is an important election, but it goes beyond the top of the ballot.

"The race is at the bottom of the ballot: the city, the school district, Austin Community College, the commissioners, Legislature. They have more direct impact on our daily lives," Elfant said.

Both Castro and Elfant agree this is a time for Texans and Americans alike to make their votes heard.
