Keeping water safety in mind during the summer

Austin pools and Travis County parks have been busy recently.

AUSTIN, Texas — The summer heat is on in Central Texas, and people are trying to jump in the water at Austin pools and Travis County parks to cool off.

Officials recommend city pools because they have lifeguards on duty. Travis County officials remind people there are no lifeguards on duty at county parks.

Fortunately, county parks have stations set up where you can grab a life jacket to borrow during a swim.

On Friday, Kevin Lopez enjoyed a picnic at Bob Wentz Park on Lake Travis after his family went swimming.

"It is pretty much fun to come with family to have time with family. It is pretty refreshing on the hot days," Lopez said.

Lopez said his younger sister always has a life jacket on as a safety precaution, and they don't go in too deep. It's a good reminder as tragedy has struck on the waters in Central Texas recently.

Earlier in June, officials said a teen died in an apparent drowning at Twin Lakes in Cedar Park. More recently, the body of an elderly man was recovered at the Cove in Arkansas Bend County Park.

Officials said the elderly man was not wearing a life jacket.
