TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — So far this year, Texas has seen more instances of West Nile Virus (WNV) than all other states across the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The numbers are rising here in the central part of the state, with the first instance reported earlier this spring.

Here are all the cases of WNV detected so far throughout the major Central Texas counties.

Travis County

Back in May, Austin Public Health identified the first positive mosquito pool of the year in Travis County.

The pool was reportedly located in southeast Austin, specifically in the 78744 ZIP code, but no humans were impacted.

A month later, the same type of trap was used to find a second pool in the same ZIP code of Travis County. Again, no human instances were reported.

Williamson County

At the start of July, Williamson County reported its fifth positive WNV sample of 2024 in Taylor, Texas.

Just a few weeks later on July 19, a resident in their 50s tested positive for WNV, according to the Williamson County and Cities Health District. This was the first time a human contracted the virus in the county this year.

On July 24, yet another trap sample tested positive at Lakewood Park in Leander.

Hays County

While Hays County did not report West Nile Virus at all last year, that hasn't been the case in 2024.

In mid-July, a trap in the 78676 ZIP code of Wimberley tested positive after samples were collected one week earlier. Another trap was reportedly detected in the 78666 ZIP code in San Marcos just days later.

A resident who lives in the 78610 ZIP code of Buda also contracted the virus that month, according to the Hays County Health Department.

Last year, approximately 913 positive pools were detected throughout Texas. As of July 2024, there have been more than 1,000 confirmed.
