Brushy Creek MUD building facility to fight zebra mussels in Lake Georgetown

The BCMUD intends to inject a low-impact, concentrated copper ion solution to attack any larvae that have passed through Lake Georgetown.

GEORGETOWN, Texas — At Lake Georgetown, leaders are fighting a zebra mussel infestation. Now the Brushy Creek Municipal Utility District (BCMUD) is building a facility to inject a solution into the lake to stop the mussels from multiplying.

According to a report from Community Impact, the BCMUD intends to inject a low-impact, concentrated copper ion solution to attack any larvae that have passed through Lake Georgetown.

The facility is part of a project to combat the mussels that began last June with the replacement of six out of nine aluminum water intake screens with copper-coated screens. It is expected to be completed by July.

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), zebra mussels are an invasive species transmitted between bodies of water by attaching to boats and other water vehicles. The TPWD says one mussel can produce one million larvae a year.

Lake Georgetown is one of 28 Texas lakes classified as infested with zebra mussels.
