American Airlines removes 5 direct flights from Austin's airport

The changes are set to take affect in October, according to the airline.

AUSTIN, Texas — Travelers looking to fly out of Austin will now be more limited when it comes to direct flights.

Starting this fall, American Airlines plans to cut five nonstop routes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).

The changes will take effect in October. The airline will stop year-round service to Las Vegas, New Orleans and Orlando, Florida, as well as seasonal service to Reno, Nevada, and Palm Springs, California.

When asked about the cuts, American provided the following statement to KVUE:

"As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will reduce service from Austin (AUS) starting in October. American will continue to offer customers access to our comprehensive global network of more than 350 destinations with one-stop connections. We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

American said it will increase seat capacity to several hubs from Austin this winter and said these adjustments are "within our capacity guidance as outlined by executives on American’s earnings call."

This isn't the first time American has cut flights from Austin's airport. Last year, the company announced its plans to get rid of routes to 21 destinations starting this year, including domestic flights to Albuquerque, New Mexico; Memphis, Tennessee; Cincinnati, Ohio; Kansas City, Missouri; and El Paso, Texas.

American also eliminated various international destinations, including Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Liberia, Costa Rica; and Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, to name a few.

American Airlines still offers 17 nonstop flights from AUS, to destinations like Boston, New York City and more.
