American Airlines announces cuts of some routes from Austin airport

A spokesperson said the airline will still offer full service to its hubs.

AUSTIN, Texas — American Airlines has announced changes to a number of routes departing from Austin's airport.

According to a report from the Austin Business Journal, recently submitted scheduling changes indicate the Fort Worth-based airline plans to cut 21 of its offered 46 destinations from Austin in the coming year, according to data collected by Cirium Diio. an airline and airport scheduling service.

A spokesperson with the airline told KVUE in a statement: “Austin remains an important market for American as we continuously evaluate our network. Together with our partners, American will continue to offer customers service to 15 of the top 20 markets from AUS, while continuing to offer one-stop connections across our comprehensive global network to more than 350 destinations around the world.” 

The spokesperson said the airline will still offer 53% more seats each day and 19 additional daily departures compared to 2019, as well as full service to all of its hubs (Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.)

American is the second airline to announce recent route cuts from Austin's airport, after Virgin Atlantic announced in October it was suspending services from Austin to London.

Here are the routes the airline plans to cut, along with dates the services will cease, according to the Austin Business Journal:

  • Cozumel International Airport, January 2024
  • Eagle County Regional Airport (Colorado), February 2024

  • Dulles International Airport, February 2024
  • Jacksonville International Airport, January 2024
  • Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (Costa Rica), April 2024
  • Sangster International Airport (Jamaica), 2024
  • Kansas City International Airport, February 2024
  • Memphis International Airport, January 2024
  • Lynden Pindling International Airport (Bahamas), March 2024
  • Will Rogers World Airport (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), February 2024
  • Punta Cana International Airport (Dominican Republic), March 2024

The Austin airport released the following statement regarding American Airlines' decision to cut some routes: 

"American Airlines has adjusted its flight schedules from AUS starting next year. We’re grateful for their offerings, which provide more nonstop departures and more seats to Central Texas travelers than in 2019. 

This holiday season and into next year, AUS looks forward to connecting travelers to a robust selection of international and domestic markets alongside all of our airline partners. We remain committed to meeting our community's demand for air service."
