Another chance for Austin's first 100-degree day comes this week

This week, another heat wave across Central Texas is expected to get some areas to 100 degrees.

AUSTIN, Texas — *A Heat Advisory will be in effect for Bastrop, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Milam, Travis and Williamson counties from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday.*

By June 25, 2023, the Austin area had already experienced a handful of 100-degree days and was entering into another streak of triple-digit heat.

But now that we have entered the summer of 2024, those who pay close attention to the weather may have noticed the lack of triple-digit days this year. So far, Camp Mabry has recorded three 99-degree days – on May 25 and May 27, and again on June 6 – but no 100-degree day.

Further to our south, San Antonio has experienced several days of 100 or more. The city had a series of triple-digit days in the first week of June 2024. Dallas recorded its first day at 100 on Sunday. Houston is in the same boat as Austin, with no triple digits on the board yet this year.

Our forecast this week is calling for multiple days at 99, and it's possible those numbers will be verified as 100 as we head deeper into summer.

Hotter yet will be our heat index. The National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory for counties along and east of Interstate 35 Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., as "feels like" temperatures could climb as high as 110 degrees.

More heat alerts may be issued in the coming days. Heat indices are expected to stay in the triple digits throughout the week. If the heat index is expected to be above 108, a Heat Advisory will be issued.

Everyone will need to continue to follow heat precautions like staying hydrated and limiting time outside.
