AUSTIN, Texas — Sneezing a lot? Noticing a big build-up of grime on your car? We all know what that means. Wednesday has brought a huge spike in oak pollen to the Austin area.
Wednesday's allergy count shows oak at over 3000 gr/m3. In addition, we're also detecting high levels of hackberry and medium levels of mulberry.
In short, the allergy slide was a mess Wednesday morning.
Why the spike in pollen? Blame the breezy weather. A gusty southwest wind set up Tuesday, and now Wednesday trends even windier thanks to a dry cold front that swept through this morning.
Now we transition to a north wind that could gust as high as 40 mph through the mid-afternoon. A Wind Advisory has been issued for all of Central Texas through 3 p.m.
Windy weather continues through the end of the workweek, so this will likely continue to stir up the allergens. We'll have a fresh allergy count for you Thursday morning but plan on high levels of oak pollen to continue.
Peak oak pollen season is mid-April, then oak levels historically taper off through May and early June.
