El Niño seasons usually bring chillier and wetter-than-average winter conditions to Central Texas. As we bounce back from the strong Arctic cold front, our attention shifts to the potential for widespread rain in the forecast.
The KVUE Weather Team is tracking several rounds of rain that will bring widespread rain chances through Wednesday.
The heaviest rainfall in the forecast will occur early Monday morning through Monday evening. During this timeframe, a couple of inches of rain will be possible, especially along and east of the Interstate 35 corridor.
Early morning commuters should beware of the potential for flash flooding and low visibility on the roadways. By the early afternoon, most rain should move east of I-35; however, additional rounds of rain are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.
Our next round of rain arrives Tuesday morning. Coverage will be more or less scattered, but heavy rains will still be possible. This type of rain will be on and off for Tuesday and could increase rainfall totals by a half-inch to two inches in spots.
As of Monday morning, the flood risk for most of Central Texas has been upgraded to a Level 2 out of 4 risk for Tuesday through early Wednesday.
Drier conditions arrive Thursday and will continue for most of Friday. Forecast models show a cold front arriving Friday night that could spark up a few isolated showers or storms, mostly north of Austin. Conditions are looking cooler and mostly dry for the weekend.
Locally, forecast models project the possibility of several inches of rainfall falling over Central Texas over a couple of days. Portions of Central and East Texas could pick up two to three inches or more just through Monday morning.
As for the multiple rounds of rain incoming on Tuesday and Wednesday, rainfall totals by Wednesday evening could reach over five inches in isolated areas.
