The Austin Police Department (APD) has made an arrest after a stabbing in South Austin on Monday evening resulted in a man's death.
Police were called to a scene in the 6700 block of Windrift Way, near West William Cannon Drive and Menchaca Road, at around 5:40 p.m. Monday after reports of a shooting or stabbing at an apartment complex. The 911 caller indicated a victim had "penetrating trauma," APD said.
The Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the scene. Despite life-saving measures and CPR, the victim – identified as 51-year-old James Lerond – was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m.
Officers on the scene later found 22-year-old Hayden Lerond, James Lerond's son, lying on the floor with blood on his knees. He had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
The investigation showed that Hayden Lerond allegedly stabbed his father, leading to his death. He was taken to the Travis County Jail and charged with first-degree murder.
Austin police have not yet released information about what led to the stabbing.
This incident is being investigated as Austin's 30th homicide of 2024.
