New details after man allegedly stabbed his father to death outside South Austin home

Police said they arrested the 22-year-old man after following a trail of blood from his father's body.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man accused of killing his father remains in jail as court documents shed new light on the alleged attack.

Hayden Lerond, 22, was arrested by the Austin Police Department after a deadly stabbing in South Austin on July 1.

According to an affidavit obtained by KVUE, police were called out to a home on Windrift Way near West William Cannon Drive and Menchaca Road after a neighbor said they heard someone yell repeatedly, "He stabbed me!"

Austin-Travis County EMS performed life-saving measures, but 51-year-old James Lerond was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found James Lerond's body in the street and noticed a trail of blood footprints leading away from the body and into a nearby garage. Police followed the trail into the home and allegedly found Hayden Lerond lying on the living room floor with blood stains on his knees.

During their investigation, a neighbor told police they saw James Lerond twitching in the street with his son covered in blood and holding a large silver knife. Police tried interviewing Hayden Lerond, but he refused to speak for police, according to the affidavit.

An autopsy revealed James Lerond suffered seven "sharp force injuries," including severe trauma to his chest that displayed enough force to break his ribs. He also had a cut nearly 8 inches long on his neck with a punctured jugular vein.

Hayden Lerond has been charged with his father's murder and is being held on a $200,000 bond. His father's death is being investigated as Austin's 30th homicide of 2024.
