Austin flyers, be aware- winter weather causing delays, cancellations

Nearly 100 flights from the airport have been canceled because of the current Central Texas freeze.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austinites looking to take to the skies on Monday might just be out of luck.

Nearly 100 flights leaving the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport before noon have already been canceled because of the current freeze in and around the Central Texas area.

A cold front arrived over the weekend with some areas experiencing power outages, road closures and early morning precipitation.

Considering these changes in temperature and conditions, the airport issued a travel alert, stating, "Artic cold and wet weather affecting travel all over the United States. Stay in touch with your airline for flight status. Monitor road conditions before driving to the airport."

Some 51 outbound and 44 inbound flights were canceled as of this morning, with additional possibilities throughout the afternoon. Some of the outbound cancellations include flights to Amsterdam, Atlanta, and Baltimore from various airlines.

Southwest Airlines appeared to have the most arrivals and departures canceled before noon when compared to other airlines.

This morning, more than 2,800 flights have been canceled across the United States thus far, including in other Texas airports.

For those flying nationally, it is recommended to arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours early and for international flyers, AUS says to arrive at least three hours in advance.
