PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — As Beryl inches closer to Texas, some churches across the state are preparing to head out and help when the storm hits.
First Baptist Church of Pflugerville is part of the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Disaster Relief, (SBTC Disaster Relief), which consists of recovery teams with a purpose to provide resources for those in need.
Mike Northen is the director of disaster relief for the local church and said he has been deployed to the hardest-hit areas for 19 years. His role, as well as the roles of volunteers, is to bring cooked meals.
Three trailers have already been loaded and are ready to hit the road Monday morning when Beryl is set to make landfall in South Texas. Roughly 10 to 15 volunteers from First Baptist are expected to make the trek.
"Our goal is to feed them the food that they need," Northen said.
Northen said their group is one of the few kitchens that can provide 30,000 to 40,000 meals a day, and they work hand-in-hand with the Salvation Army and American Red Cross in delivering the meals.
Although uncertainty still looms of how much disaster Beryl will leave, Northen said the priority is keeping people's hopes alive.
"We've faced a lot of broken people," Northen said. "Even though there's been a disaster that happened, and we're there to share that love and to help them all that we can."
