AUSTIN, Texas — After a crash in southeast Austin killed four people, nearby residents are reflecting on the road that led them there.
"Since they built this, it's a death trap," Jeanette Mouser said.
The crash happened Sunday afternoon along the southbound service road of State Highway 130, near Maha Loop. In addition to the four people killed, officials say two others were hurt in the crash.
It's the second deadly crash in the area in less than two months.
"There's always a stop sign. Not here. It's a flashing light," Irma Lira said. "And I think that catches people, especially if they're not familiar with the area."
Lira has lived in the area for more than 25 years. She said it's time for safety improvements to be made, hoping that they can save lives.
"They just need to put a streetlight, an actual streetlight, there or a stop sign with red, big red flashing lights to let everybody know that you're merging into something that's probably very dangerous," Lira said.
Authorities responded to the deadly crash involving a vehicle with five people inside of it and a Peterbilt dump truck with a driver inside. The Texas Department of Public Safety did not confirm the identities of the victims.
"It's nerve-wracking because you never know if it's going to be a family member or an actual friend that just left your home ... that that might have happened to," Lira said.
Jeanette Mouser is another resident in the area whose husband witnessed the accident on his way to the convenience store.
"It's very tragic that that happened," Mouser said. "He's, you know, a pretty strong guy but he goes, 'Honey, oh my God, oh my God. People, four people got killed.' And if you're not paying attention, you get hit."
TxDOT released the following statement to KVUE about the crash and any possible safety improvements to the area:
"Law enforcement is investigating the crash and we don’t have full details on the cause. TxDOT reviews all fatality crashes to determine if safety enhancements are needed and will do so in this case."
